Haitian soccer team teaches the world a lesson in good sportsmanship

When Shek Borkowski found out the Trinidad and Tobago women’s soccer team came to the United States with only $500, he knew he had to help.

Borkowski is the coach of the Haitian women’s soccer team. They play Trinidad and Tobago on Oct. 17 in the CONCACAF women’s championship tournament, which serves as qualifying for the 2015 Women’s World Cup. But even though the teams are fighting for the same thing, it doesn’t matter. He wants to help his friends have a chance at making it to Canada next summer.

Borkowski and Trinidad and Tobago coach Randy Waldrum go way back. Waldrum coached at Notre Dame before moving to the National Women’s Soccer League team Houston Dash, and Borkowski coaches the semi-professional women’s soccer club FC Indiana, which is based in South Bend, Ind. The Haitian soccer team lost its coach in the 2010 earthquake, and Borkowski took over nearly three years ago and brought them to Indiana where they’ve been training in hopes of qualifying for the 2015 World Cup.

Borkowski explained how grateful he is to Waldrum, who agreed to play his national championship winning Fighting Irish against the Haitians to help them train, and also introduced him to different benefactors who have supported the national team financially so they could stay in the area.

“As you can imagine, the economical situation in Haiti is pretty bad, but the last two or three weeks, we’ve been blessed with an unusually high number of people stepping up and supporting us, ” he said. “All our needs, our apartments are paid for for October and November, our utilities are paid for, and we have enough funds for food.

“We had a little bit of extra money sitting there and said, ‘Hey, we’ll be competing with them for 90 minutes and that will be a battle between us and them, but before and after, we’re friends. We have similar challenges as they do. We’ve been there many times. We understand what they’re going through. And in the future, we may need help and we may have to lean on somebody. They need help and they need to lean on somebody. And we want to be the people that will help them.”

When Borkowski called his friend Waldrum to tell him that they were going to help out, he was shocked.

“His first reaction was, ‘Shek, don’t do this. You guys need it just as much as we do, ’” Borkowski said. “And then I sent him a message saying why we were going to do it and he understood.”

This is money they raised independently before learning that the Clintons were going to help fund them as they try and make it to Canada.

Wednesday, Borkowski learned that Haiti’s soccer federation received a call from the Clinton Foundation, an charitable organization run by former President Bill Clinton and his family, saying that they wanted to help the team.

Following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, President Clinton has been invested in building the country back up.

“After hearing about the efforts of Haiti’s national women’s soccer team to qualify for the World Cup, several members of Clinton Global Initiative reached out to the Clinton Foundation to see how they could help, ” Clinton Foundation spokesman Craig Minassian said in an email to For The Win. “The Clinton Foundation and Partners In Health have spoken with the team and are helping connect them with interested supporters.”

Haiti will compete in Group A of the CONCACAF Women’s Championship, playing Guatemala, Trinidad and Tobago and the United States. Borkowski says they have enough money to last them through the tournament.
